of plaque-like form with each side mirroring the other, the top section with two fish in either corner above rows of curved lines, in the center a bird with large head and tail and inset opercula (turbo petholatus) eyes; handwritten label 'Malangan - N. New Ireland - 19 cent. UALK-' in black pigment on bottom; aged surface with red, white, blue and brown pigments.

Good condition overall for an object of this rare type; left upper half of tail broken and reattached; loss to looping section of tail feathers, restoration above the bird's head; several horizontal age cracks; nicks and scratches, wear and tear throughout.
