oak, the handles and feet incorporating stylised 'M's, the rectangular top with two frieze drawers, on twin octagonal supports carved with a stylised foliate design and joined by a chamfered stretcher

Condition

A decorative piece of good overall condition. Old scratches and dents consistent with age and use. A practical piece of good structural condition which is ready for use and display.

Catalogue Note

For their work for John Winston Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough, Holland & Sons adapted designs they had commisioned from Pugin. A Hungarian ash chest of drawers made for the duke, bearing the same stylised 'M' handles, is illustrated in Jeremy Cooper, Victorian and Edwardian Furniture & Interiors, London, 1987, fig. 120.
