  • 2ft 9¾in., 1ft 5in., 1ft 7in.
ebonised mahogany and silk upholstery, pierced and fluted geometric backrest, the square legs joined by a stretcher 

Condition

A striking example of good overall condition. Some old marks and scratches generally and some typical rubbing and light scraping to edges. Piece has been repolished with a few very minor chips to paint. Reverse of back with additional rubbing to finish. Piece has been reupholstered in silk, which has a few very minor pulls, but remains in very good condition. Structurally sound and ready for use and display.

Only two examples of this chair are known.
The back panel of this chair derives from Japanese architecture, which Godwin had studied. There is a line drawing of a similar chair in William Watt, Art Furniture from Designs by E.W. Godwin, F.S.A., London, 1877, pl. 6 (as seen below), and a lower variant is shown in Susan Soros, The Secular Furniture of E.W. Godwin, New Haven, 1999, no. 137.
