Madeleine Biéler, die zweite Ehefrau des Künstlers, klärt uns in ihren Tagebuchaufzeichnungen vom 5. August 1945 über die Anekdote auf, welche Gegenstand des Gemäldes ist: "... il [Ernest Biéler] a invité ses modèles à boire une bonne bouteille ... Puis il [Emmanuel] nous dit qu'avec de l'instruction, ΄il serait devenu évêque! ... Oui, reprend-il, j'aurais pu devenir évêque, et puis, si j'avais pu étudier quatre ou cinq ans ... je serais devenu de plus ...΄΄Alors, lui dis-je [Madeleine Biéler], vous seriez devenu Pape?΄ ΄Non, dit-il modestement, mais plus que Pape!΄ Obstiné, la pipe à la bouche, il assène un coup sur la table et reprend: ΄Monsieur et madame Biélé[!], j'aurais pu devenir évêque!΄. Le peintre le regarde, bienveillant, tandis que Debons hoche la tête et, vaguement inquiet, observe Emmanuel." (Madeleine Biéler, Ernest Biéler. Sa vie, son œuvre, Lausanne 1953, S. 316-317). Aus den Ausstellungsunterlagen von 1945 geht ebenfalls hervor, dass es sich bei den Dargestellten um Emmanuel Héritier und Ignace Debons handelt.
