Description

the compressed globular body rising to a tall slightly flaring tubular neck, painted on the opaque milk white glass with yellow blossoms wrapping around the neck of the bottle and sprouting from a gnarled tree branch, below full pink peony blooms issuing from behind a garden rock, stand

Condition

The vase is slightly warped, as visible in the catalogue. Otherwise it is in very good condition, the enamels are very bright and clean. There is a glaze gap to the bottom of the rocks, of approx 0.7 by 0.1cm, and a tiny loss to the edge of the grassy patch of approx 0.1 by 0.1cm. There is a tiny nick to the interior below the rim.

A glass vase of similar shape and decoration with an additional keyfret around the rim is illustrated in Bo Gyllensvard, A Botanical Excursion in the Kempe Collection, B.M.F.E.A., no.37, 1965, pl.15. See another related vase but with a slightly more compressed body, painted with a blossoming prunus tree and flowers including poppies and begonias, formerly in the Nagatani and later in the Stephen Junkunc III collections, sold at Christie's New York, 21st September 1995, lot 265; and one from the Menasce collection published in the 'Arts of the Ch'ing Dynasty', Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, 1963-64, pl. 85, fig. 247.
