rectangular with rounded angles, the cover mounted on blue oval with diamond monogram and crown of Christian IX surrounded by four rose diamonds in silver collets, the surfaces engine-turned within borders of chased formal foliage, maker's mark only struck inside base and cover

Christian IX (8 April 1818 - 29 January 1906) was a son of the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.  He was chosen heir-apparent to the throne of Denmark in 1847 and succeeded 16 November 1863.
