Description

  • length of dishes 10 1/8 in. (25.6cm) diameter of tray 16 7/8 in. (42.8cm)
comprising four kidney-shaped dishes and covers, the covers flat-chased and engraved with a  band of palmettes and flowers linked by scrolls, the covers centered by seated greyhound finials, marked on dishes and covers, dishes engraved Puiforcat Paris and stamped MADE IN FRANCE, finials numbered 389; now fitted with a conforming circular tray and circular central dish and cover, by Grand Sterling, New York

Catalogue Note

This service is after an 1809-19 model by Biennais probably purchased by Marshal Bernadotte after being elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810.  The Biennais service was formerly in the the Puiforcat Collection and is now owned by the Louvre.  The hound-form handles are also found on a similar service used for Eugène de Beauharais, sold Sotheby's, New York, Collection of Mrs. Edward F. Hutton, 7-10 June 1972, lot 542.
