Catalogue Note
Prince Augustus Frederick, created Duke of Sussex in 1801, was the 6th son of George III and Queen Charlotte. Asthma prevented him from taking an active role in the government or military, but he was Queen Victoria's favoriate uncle and gave her away at her marriage to Prince Albert. He lived in Kensington Palace, collecting a library of over 15,000 books and an extensive group of silver. On his death in 1843 over 15,000 people paid their respects.
This lot probably appears in the "Catalogue of the Truly Magnificent Collection of Ancient and Modern Silver, Silver Gilt, and Gold PLATE of His Late Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, K.G.", Christie & Mason, 22-27 June 1843, as either lot 140, "A snuffer stand and snuffers" under "Ornamental Gilt Plate," or lot 141 "A ditto and ditto, with scalloped edge."
