Catalogue Note

The inscription inside the cover reads:
In commemoration of the Charter granted by Richard II to the Saddler's Company. 20th Mar. 1395.

This is a copy of the Lee tankard by Jacob Bodendick, London, 1676, and was presented by the Saddler's Company Court to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the company's incorporation charter of 1395.  The company holds three of their tankards.  Another is in The Royal Artillery Museum. (We are grateful to Sue Hurley, Saddler's Company, for this information)
