oval, painted with exotic birds on a white ground, chased gilt-metal mounts and hinged flower-chased bail handle, the plated interior with enamel cover painted with a bird on a branch

The present lot is similar to an oval caddy painted with ornament adapted from Pillement's The Ladies' Amusement and engravings by Hancock and Benazech from designs by C. Fenn, sold Sotheby's, London, Property of the Late the Hon. Mrs. Nellie Ionides, 24 May 1976, lot 56, and a matching example, possibly its pair, in the Schreiber Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum (no. 144. pl. 9).
