Catalogue Note

Kate Cameron, the sister of David Young Cameron, gained her formative artistic training at Glasgow School of Art where she studied under Francis Newberry and alongside John Quinton Pringle, Charles Rennie Macintosh and his wife Margaret MacDonald Macintosh. The title of the current work is taken from an epigram by the poet William Watson:

"Love like a bird, hath perch'd upon a spray
For thee and me to hearken what he sings
Contented, he forgets to fly away;
Bur hush!...remind not Eros of this wings"

Hush! Remind not Eros of his Wings was owned by the well known collector of Impressionist works Arthur Kay from 1906 and would have been hung alongside masterpieces such as L'Absinthe by Edgar Degas.  Arthur Kay fell in love with Cameron after their first meeting in 1898, the year the present work was completed, however Kay, already a married man, was unable to act upon his affections.  They finally married in 1928 when Catherine was 54 and it is likely that during these years of separation Hush! Remind not Eros of his Wings provided Kay with an enduring symbol of his love for Cameron.
