Description

  • John Sargeant Noble
  • Guarding the Day's Bag
  • signed and dated l.r.: J. S. Noble / 1883
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is original. There is a small tear to the canvas with resulting paint loss just upper left of centre. There is a further dent to the left of the afforementioned tear which has resulted is some minor paint loss but the canvas has remained relatively intact. There is a further minor dent just above the shoulder af the central dog which has resulted in some minor paint loss. There is some minor craquelure to the paint surface in places. There is surface dirt to the work and a discoloured varnish - the work would benefit from a light clean. There are some circular areas of lighter pigment (in the upper left corner and to the head of the central bird) which are likely to be due to a light test clean. Otherwise in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some cosmetic retouching to the edge of the bag in the lower right section. There are some slightly fluorescent areas (extreme upper left corner and cenral section) which are probably due to a thick, uneven varnish. Held in a decorative gold painted composite frame in fair condition.
