Catalogue Note

Ekaterina Belashova was one of the leading Soviet sculptors. Born in St. Petersburg, she began her artistic training in VKHUTEIN under R. Bach and A. Matveev. Later she moved to Moscow where she became the professor of sculpture at the Moscow Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, and the Moscow School of Industrial Arts. Belashova's works are characterised by the beauty of the silhouettes and finess of the proportions. For many years she laboured over the portrayal of Nadezhda Krupskaya (1869-1939), Russian Marxist revolutionary, close associate and wife of Lenin. The artist's last creation was the model for the 1976 sculpture of Krupskaya erected near the Sretenskiy Gates Place in Moscow and which embodies the best traits of a Russian woman and revolutionary.
