Catalogue Note
The Order of St. Alexander Nevsky was founded by Catherine I in 1725, having been planned by her late husband Peter the Great. It was awarded in one class only for most distinguished civil or military service and was outranked only by the Orders of St. Andrew and St. Catherine. Alexander Nevsky himself was a Russian military hero of the 13th Century who was canonized by the Orthodox Church.
The partnership of Wilhelm Kämmerer and Wilhelm Keibel became the official supplier of Russian Orders following the death of Emanuel Pannasch in 1836.
