Catalogue Note

The institution of The Order of St. Vladimir on September 22nd 1782 marked the 25th Anniversary of Catherine the Great's reign.  The Order was bestowed in four classes and the First and Second Class badges were of similar size, distinguished by the manner of wear (First Class from a sash, Second Class from a neck riband).  When awarded for long service with honour or for special valour, the Third and Fourth Classes were worn from a riband bow.  Awards for military service were distinguished by the addition of crossed swords in the angles of the badge.
