Catalogue Note
The icon comes from the Festival Tier of an iconostases and is an interesting representation of the occasion when Simeon receives the child Jesus and states that he, the old servant, and representative of the 'old' Jewish faith, can go in peace because he has seen the light and glory of God (Luke 2: 30-32).
This symbolism is reinforced by the unusual positioning of the Jewish prophetess Anna in the background. She is more commonly depicted clearly visible in the foreground on icons of the Presentation. Here she is replaced by St. Peter, already holding the keys of the heavenly Kingdom.
The altar behind Simeon and the Mother of God shows the cross and the symbols of the Passion – the link between the Old and the New Testament.
