The Annuciation, circa 1600

the Archangel Gabriel is greeting the Virgin Mary holding his messenger's staff in one hand and making a gesture of blessing with the other;  the Virgin has stood up from her throne and is bowing her head; in her hands she is holding the red thread which will be used to weave the new curtain for the temple in Jerusalem

The background and body have been stripped to the gesso. The left border of the icon has been replaced up to and including the left wing of the angel. Several parts have been overpainted and retouched. We would advise prospective buyers to view.

The icon was composed from the top of a Royal Door and made into its current form in the 19th century.
