Catalogue Note

A La Vielle Russie is a family business originating in Kiev in 1851. The firm escaped the turmoil of the revolution and re-established in a premises in Rue Faubourg St. Honore in Paris around 1921. The firm was frequented by members of the Russian nobility in exile and even purportedly Grand Duchesses Xenia and Olga, sisters of Nicholas II.  With the onset of the second world war the firm moved in 1934 to New York, first to the Rockefeller Centre, then to Fifth Avenue; they settled at their current location on 59th Street in 1961.
