Catalogue Note

A double representation of Jesus Christ on the Easter icon is not unusual. The central portrayal is the moment when He redeems the chosen of the Old Testament. Besides the 'spiritual' moment, the divine redemption, the icon shows Christ's second nature by His corporeal resurrection shown in the lower left-hand corner.

This icon is most interesting however as it emphasises His victory over the Hades with a third representation of Christ descending in the open mouth of the Hades, the broken gates stick out like fangs.
