The background has been stripped to the gesso. There is some modern retouching, particularly to the hair of the Archangels. The lower border and lower horizontal section have been repainted. We would advise prospective buyers to view.

The Greek word Deïsis, which encompasses the concepts of 'prayer' and 'intercession', traditionally designates the composition in which the Mother of God and John the Forerunner, in three-quarter profile and an attitude of prayer, address the central figure of Christ Pantocrator. In this role Christ acts as supreme judge at the end of time, while the Mother of God and John serve as intercessors on behalf of all people and speak on their behalf.

The icon has probably come from a private chapel or the side chapel of a large church. Icons like these were also placed above the main entrance of a church. The simplicity and harmonious rhythm of the composition of the icon, the balanced structure and highly expressive faces endow the image with great eloquence. The use of ochre pigments and the simple but very individual style of painting indicate a provenance from Northern Russia and a date in the 17th century.
