- height: 26.5cm., 10 1/2 in.
one painted with a portrait of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich (1798-1849), the other with his wife, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlova (1807-1873), the back of each gilded with a double-headed eagle, one with the initial M, the other with the initial E, purple bodies and gilded handles and bases, apparently unmarked
Condition
The gilding has worn on the base, handles and rim of the neck. There may have been regilding at a later date as there are traces of gilt on the body of the vase depicting the Grand Duke, beside one of the handles. There are some surface scratches to the paintwork

Catalogue Note
Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich of Russian, son of Emperor Paul I, married Princess Charlotte of Württemburg (later Elena Pavlovna) in 1824. It is likely that these vases were produced in celebration of this occasion.
