Catalogue Note

Chekhonin mastered an impressive range of disciplines, including sculpture, ceramics, book illustration, caricatures and typography design among others. He was a key member of the World of Art society and twice head of the State Porcelain Manufactory prior to his emigration. His ability to intelligently synthesize different branches of learning, used to great effect in the offered work, is one of the most appealing elements of his art. It was painted after his emigration to Paris in 1928, where he worked as a designer for Nikita Baliev's Chauve-souris cabaret and the Ballets Russes.
