Catalogue Note
Edvard Steinberg studied independently by copying the works of great figurative painters such as Vrubel and Van Gogh, but out of all the Nonconformist artists, he was perhaps the most directly influenced by the master of the Avant-garde, Kasimir Malevich.
Employing geometrical forms such as the circle, prism, triangle, square, sphere and cross, Steinberg has created a unique 'post-suprematist' style. His metaphysical paintings contain a contemplative and religious sub-text based on the dualistic concept of inner and outer space. By the abstraction of form and the reduction of light, the world becomes indefinable and can only be 're-constructed' by the viewer's imagination.
