Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This picture is painted on a very heavy piece of wood which has been cradled. It is stable yet the panel has cracked over time and there are half a dozen old splits in the wood which are visible on the lower and upper edge. Under ultraviolet light there are some restorations visible particularly in the forehead and eyebrows of the figure and also along the bottom edge and above the figure's head in the upper left. The bird and the sky in the upper right are well-preserved, as is the remainder of the picture. There is a small restoration situated beneath the right end of the signature and the 'B' of Boris seems to fluoresce under ultraviolet light, yet in our opinion this is original paint.
