Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has been lined using wax as an adhesive. The paint layer may be slightly dirty but looks respectable. Under ultraviolet light some fairly broad areas paint fluoresce darkly in the sky and also here and there in the foreground. While all of these fluorescing areas of paint may not correspond to restorations, some of them may, and it is most likely that there is some restoration that has been applied, to the sky at least, although the reasons are unclear. The paint layer does not appear to be abraded or damaged. It is likely that the restorations, if indeed they are restorations, are quite broadly applied and could be reexamined.

Catalogue Note

In 1929, Falk traveled to Paris and was instantly mesmerized by the city's allure. He remained in France until 1938, participating in several exhibitions and finding inspiration in various artistic circles.

On the Boulevard. Paris communicates the artist's love for Paris in his rendering of a Parisian street scene. Cézanne's influence is evident as Falk's brushstrokes and pleasant hues convey the atmosphere of a brisk spring day. Falk depicted several Parisian street scenes between 1928 and 1938, but the present composition is without doubt among his most impressive.
