Catalogue Note
The unusually rich detail and quality of this casting is a product of Charles Bertault's management of the Chopin foundry beginning in 1886. Félix Chopin made Bertault, a pupil of Ferdinand Barbedienne, a manager and co-owner of the bronzeworks on the basis of the latter's unparalleled talent. His opinion was widely shared; the firm of Chopin and Bertault was awarded medals at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions universelles in Paris and the 1896 All-Russian Industrial Exhibition at Nizhnyi-Novgorod.
