Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting appears never to have been restored. It is unlined and has most likely never been cleaned. There is a small loss in the lower center in the shadows of the buildings yet elsewhere there seem to be no other losses or restorations. This picture will respond very well to cleaning and varnishing, and will require hardly any retouches.

Catalogue Note

Gorbatov left Russia for Italy by 1924, and over the next two years it was on the island of Capri that he created many of his best works. His Impressionistic style was ideal for rendering such vibrant and sunny surroundings, and the magical paintings that resulted brought him both artistic respect and financial success. Hot Day. Anacapri was painted in 1926, the year Gorbatov moved permanently to Berlin, and it captures with perfection the vivid colors and warm atmosphere he experienced while in a small town on the island.
