Catalogue Note

Works by Khodorovich (Chodorowicz) rarely appear on the market.  The sculptor, a Pole born in Belorus, was expelled from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1863 for his support of the Polish uprising.  He was sent to serve in the army in Tbilisi (formerly Tiflis) in Georgia; although it was intended as punishment, Khodorovich became enamored of the southern capital and he remained there for the rest of his life.  He became an important member of Georgian artistic society and won several major commissions for public monuments.  In 1886, a St. Petersburg journal noted that Khodorovich was preparing a group of genre figures depicting peoples of the Caucasus, based in part on his extensive travels throughout Georgia and neighboring regions, and this composition is certainly from among those works.
