Catalogue Note

These plates are replacements for the famous Service aux camées  ordered by Catherine the Great from Sèvres in 1776 and delivered in St. Petersburg in 1779. In 1841, Emperor Nicholas I commissioned a series of replacements for pieces of the original service that had been lost or broken.  For a discussion of this service and the additions, see Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, vol. II, pp. 762-782; Versailles et les tables royales en Europe, XVIIème-XIXème siècles, Versailles, 1993, pp. 322-327 and N.B. von Wolf (ed. T.N.
