Catalogue Note

The kovsh depicts the figure of the tsaritsa and her magical mirror from Alexander Pushkin's 1833 The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights, a retelling of the Brothers Grimm's Snow White set in the mythical Russian past. The inscription on the handle paraphrases the refrain, "and to her the looking glass replied: you are the fairest of all."
