Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This pair of very large paintings is in fresh and healthy condition. The canvases are both stretched on serviceable stretchers and there are no reinforcements on the reverse of either canvas. The paint layers are both clean and stable with a light sheen to them, which is most likely the artist's original medium. The stretchers could be tightened slightly but the less that is done to these two pictures, the better. In general the condition is very good.

Catalogue Note

Arsen Savadov was born in Kiev, and he graduated from the Kiev Art Institute in 1986. Since 1987, he has participated in major exhibitions throughout Europe and  in the United States. Critics often describe his paintings as "Neo-Baroque" because his elaborate compositions are reminiscent of seventeenth-century Baroque painting. However, Savadov's compositions are entirely his own—particularly distinguished by the massive scale used to depict the colorful and fantastical world inhabited by his frenzied subjects. The end result is a social commentary that speaks to the loss of order and, to a certain extent, the loss of civilization within contemporary society.
