Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting has been lined using glue as an adhesive. The lining was most likely originally designed to compensate for a damage in the face of the sitter, in her nose and on the left side of her face. In addition to the restoration in the sitters face, there are a few retouches around the edges and in the corners. More recently some other losses seem to have been made which have not been restored. These are situated in the lower left corner and in the center left, and another couple of isolated losses in the upper left.
These losses could all be retouched, and the retouching in the face could be corrected as they are not perfectly matched at present. The lining is reasonably competent but it could also be improved. There are a couple of scratches around the signature but the signature itself seems to be undamaged.
