Catalogue Note
Yefim Cheptsov became famous for his paintings of everyday life, especially that of the Russian peasantry and working class. In his works created after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, he vividly depicted the new Soviet citizenry that emerged in the aftermath of the Revolution, producing works that became real documents of the post-Revolutionary era.
Cheptsov initially studied icon painting and then went on to take art classes at the Tenisheva School (1901). From 1905 to 1911 he continued his art education at the Academy of Fine Arts under Vladimir Makovsky, a famous Realist artist and member of the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions. After graduation, he was sent on an Academy fellowship to Western Europe, remaining there from 1911 to 1913. He exhibited with the Itinerants and became an important member of AKhRR (Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia) in 1922.
