Catalogue Note

The offered lot was painted circa 1928-1930.

Inspired by his first trip to Italy in 1914 as a student with Vasily Shukhaev, Alexander Yakovlev was to return there time and again. He developed an interest in the art of the ancient and tragically doomed city of Pompeii and, in particular, the beautiful Roman frescoes which no doubt encouraged his own love of mural painting. Yakovlev delighted in the fusion between the modern and ancient worlds and was celebrated for his particular brand of 'neo classicism'. The muted tones of this painting are perhaps an echo of the faded Pompeian frescoes and Renaissance masters that he loved.
