Catalogue Note

According to a record of engraving patterns preserved in the archives of Edward Barnard & Sons (Archive of Art and Design, London), the decoration of this lot and the following was executed by a Mr Smallwood. An accompanying note states that he was an American who worked in London for a short time before returning to his native country. He was presumably the Henry Fulton Smallwood of 323 Essex Road, Islington, North London who was listed in Kelly's London Directory for 1885 under the heading of 'general engravers'.
