signed Waagen Scu and dated 1869 with the L. MARTIN fondeur foundry mark.
Condition
Overall in good original condition with the usual wear to patina in places, especially to the top of head, arms and legs consistent with handling and touching. Light scratches and dents consistent with age. Oxidation to the naturalistic base and the top of one dog. The rifle held at his back is available but detached from the sculpture and lacking the screws which hold it in place, now with two visible holes for those screws. The wooden pedestal with cracks now showing the underpaint coat in places.

Catalogue Note
Waagen was a sculptor of German-Baltic extraction who settled permanently in Paris and exhibited at the Salon between 1861 and 1887. His models show a fascination with Orientalist themes, and the most successful of these was the Kabyle au Retour de la Chasse. Another cast of this model is in the Dahesh Museum, New York.
