For four generations, the Tadolini family occupied a renowned studio on the Via del Babuino, Rome, and they were one of the most prolific producers of sculpture for almost 150 years. Educated at the Academy of Art, in Rome, Guilio took over the studio after the death of his father in 1892.

Known as well for his Orientalist themes, Tadolini followed the style of other sculptors, such as Charles Cordier (see lot 86) and Pietro Calvi (see lot 89), who often used gilt and silvered bronze accented with semi-precious stones, marble, and onyx to convey the visual richness of their exotic subjects. A similar carved marble and patinated bronze bust, entitled Donna Araba, by Guilio Tadolini, bearing same pose and jeweled decoration, is illustrated in Panzetta, p. 919, pl. 1807.
