LeQuesne was born and worked in Paris, where he studied under James Pradier. He won numerous prizes throughout his career, including the Prix de Rome in 1843, 1844, and 1851. He also won a medal in the Paris 1855 Exposition Universelle and, during the same year, was elected to become a knight of the Légion d'Honneur. The present group was cast by Susse in four sizes, of which the present lot is the tallest.
