Catalogue Note

Second edition, the first produced by the unlocated Printer of the Moreh ha-Nevukhim, about 1473–75 (Offenberg 94; BMC XIII 10, C.49.e.6); the first book signed by Gershom Soncino, nephew of Joshua, and the most famous of the early Jewish printers. The Sefer Mitzvot Gadol is dated 1250. It provides an exposition of each of the 613 precepts (mitzvot) of Mosaic law, divided into two parts: negative precepts, and positive ones. It survives also in a considerable number of medieval manuscript copies, and was reprinted by Daniel Bomberg in Venice, 1522 and 1547. A copy in the Library of Congress of the Sefer Mitzvot Gadol bears an inscription in Gershom's hand, recording that he sold it on 29 December 1488, just ten days after its completion.
