Catalogue Note
Kodashim, is the fifth of the six orders of the Mishnah. The title Kodashim (sacred things) is apparently an abbreviation of Shehitat Kodashim (the slaughter of sacred animals) since its main subject is sacrifices. It has been suggested that since Zevahim, the first tractate of the order, had also once been called Shehitat Kodashim, the name Kodashim was applied to the order as a whole.
This volume of the Mishnaic order Kodashim is one of three (the other two being Zera'im and Tohorot) that Bomberg's press produced as part of the first edition of the Babylonian Talmud. Bomberg's decision to include these three orders of the Mishnah insured that all 63 tractates would be presented and not only those with Gemara.
