Description
- Count Joseph Boze
- Portrait of Louis XVI, King of France (1754-1793) bust length, wearing a blue and gold embroidered velvet coat, the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit and its blue sash, the so-called "Cordon Bleu".
- oil on canvas, oval
- 41.3 by 33 cm
Provenance
Acquired by the uncle of the present owner's family in Paris before 1940.
Condition
The actual painting is a bit less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The painting has a relining. Overall the painting is in good condition, the paint surface is a bit dry and some discoloured retouchings are visible in the background to the right. The paint surface is under a discoloured varnish layer which shows some surface scratches, mainly above and next to the sitter.
Although inspection under UV-light is impeded by the varnish, small and scattered old retouchings become apparent in the background, face and left arm of the sitter.
Offered in a decorative oval frame, in good condition and as illustrated in the catalogue. (JD)
