Description

  • 160 by 91 cm.
surmounted by a central crest, carved from a separate piece and probably replaced, human masks supporting the bottom scrolls on either side, of softwood, carved and gilt, partly tooled with circlets, the border matted around the looking glass, the latter with bevelled edges

Condition

In restored condition, re-gilt, the looking glass of age but not original, repair to foliate carvings and central head on top, the inevitable minor dents and scratches due to age and use, the matted border with minor cracks.

Catalogue Note

This mirror is designed in Palladian style that reflects the influence of the published work of William Jones (fl. from 1737, d. 1757) who published in 1739 The Gentleman or Builder's Companion, containing Variety of useful Designs for Doors, Gateways, Peers, Pavilions, Temples, Chimney-Pieces &c., and that of Abraham Swan (fl. 1745-68) in The British Architect, published in 1745. Both these books include a number of designs for mirrors that include details found in the present example.
