Catalogue Note

The present set of folding maps is of historical interest as they are said to have been taken from Marshal Ney on his retreat after the battle near Smolensk and that of Borodino in 1812, together with all his other belongings. He and his Cossacks fell into the hands of Prussian-Russian troops under the command of General Major Pilar von Pilchau near Gumbinnen.
Named the Bravest of the Brave by Napoleon I, Marshal Ney hardly needs an introduction. Although the battle of Borodino is recorded as a victory for the French, both sides suffered immense losses and the retreat of the French from Russia became imperative. The marshal is said not to have been recognised upon entering the officer's canteen in Gumbinnen, such was his physical condition.
