Description

  • Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot
  • A village scene with peasants dancing, a mountainous landscape in the background
  • oil on canvas laid down on board, octagonal
  • 76.7 by 88.7 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is a bit darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is laid down on board, which has flattened the paint surface. Abrasion is visible throughout the background and in the dark brown hues in the foreground. Retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the sky and in the architecture to the right. The paint surface is under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light reveals additional retouchings throughout, especially in the sky, a repaired and retouched tear to the centre right; scattered smaller ones in the figures and more extensive retouchings in the lower right corner and strips along the right and left edges. Offered in an octagonal pale wood frame, in good condition. (JD)
