Condition
The actual painting is slightly darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has a relining. The paint surface has flattened and abraded in some places, for example in the glasswork, leg of the wooden ledge, and pewter plate, but is overall in fair condition, no damages are visible to the front. Retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the background, in the ivory cup, glasswork and red cloth. The paint surface is under a dense and fine craquelure pattern and covered with a glossy and discoloured varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light confirms the abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional small ones throughout the painting, such as in the roemer, the leaves and grapes and more in the red cloth.
Offered in a wood gilt frame with plaster ornaments, in good condition, just a few chips. (JD)
