Justus Juncker Mainz 1703 - 1767 Frankfurt-am-Main

Estimate
4,000 - 6,000 EUR
bidding is closed

Description

  • Justus Juncker
  • Figures eating, drinking and smoking at a table; A mother and child, a soldier and an elderly couple drinking at a table
  • a pair, both oil on panel
  • each: 24.3 by 20.4 cm.

Condition

Both paintings are less bright and reddish in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. Both panels consist of one piece and are bevelled along all sides. The paint surface is in good condition in both paintings; there are some pinpoint spots of paint losses along the edges, otherwise no damages are visible. In both the paint layer has a fine craquelure pattern and is under a glossy and discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light is impeded by the thick and uneven varnish layer, but it seems that both paintings are very well preserved. Offered in two decorative gilt plaster frames, in fair condition, with a few chips. (JD)

Catalogue Note

Typical of Juncker is the production of pairs of genre scenes, representing groups of figures in an interior setting. As shown in the present pair, Juncker was influenced by the work of the second and third generation of Dutch genre painters.
