Description
- The Resurrection of Christ
- tempera on panel, gold ground
- 87 by 63.1 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is less bright in its colours than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel seems to consist of at least four smaller planks, joined vertically and unbevelled. There is a layer of gesso applied to the reverse. The join to the left has opened up, this is visible in the catalogue illustration. Along this join the paint has started to flake.
The paint surface is not in good condition. The tempera paint (and the gold ground of the halo) is flaking throughout and several small paint losses are visible as well as scratches in the surface, especially in the soldier to the right. Filled and retouched damages are visible in the area to right of Christ. The paint layer is under a very dirty and discoloured varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals retouchings throughout, but mostly in the two figures next to Christ, although the varnish layer impedes UV-inspection somewhat, but it seems that the Christ figure is well preserved.
Offered in a modern, painted frame, with damages and chips.
This painting is offered with another painting, on a single panel (bevelled) and not in good condition, with several retouchings. Offered in a similar painted frame. (JD)
