Condition
Both paintings are darker in tone and have less contrast than the catalogue illustration suggests.
Both canvases are relined. The paint layer is in both paintings unstable, especially in the first illustrated painting in which there are several damages (tears) and paint losses, some have been filled and retouched, visible along the top and left edge, in the lower centre, and to the lower right. The paint surface of the second painting is better preserved, although not in good condition and damages and paint losses are visible in the lower right. Discoloured retouchings are visible in both paintings, especially in the sky. The paint layer is covered with surface dirt and a very dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Both paintings need to be cleaned and restored.
Inspection under UV-light reveals retouchings throughout both paintings: in the first mainly throughout the lower half of the painting and in the roof of the country house. The second painting shows overall more retouchings: a few spots in the sky, but especially in the tower, the gate and in the road in front of the gate as well as a few spots in the lower right area.
Offered in plain, wood and plaster gilt frames, with damages and chips. (JD).

The unknown artist of this work surely was inspired by the work of Jan Asselijn (Dieppe after 1610 - 1652 Amsterdam), especially evident in the characteristic architecture that is being used in this pair of southern landscapes.
