Condition
The actual painting is a bit darker in tone han the catalogue illustration suggests.
The marouflé panel consists of one smaller piece with the philosopher which has been extended with several wood strips, the joins run horizontally and are visible to the front. The panel is slightly bowed. The join upper right is open.
The paint layer has a tendency towards flaking along the joins and is under a dense and fine craquelure pattern. A small surface scratch upper centre, but no further damages are visible.
Inspection under UV-light reveals retouchings along the joins, some pinpoint spots in the philosopher's face and beard and some minor spots in the book and the area surrounding him.
Offered in a plain gilt frame, a few chips (JD).
