Description

  • Hendrik Mommers
  • A market scene in an Italianate landscape
  • indistinctly signed lower left: J.G...
  • oil on panel
  • 85 by 103.2 cm.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 7 March 1980, lot 21.

Condition

The actual painting is darker in tone and the colours are less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of three planks, joined vertically and is flat. The joins are hardly visible to the front. The upper plank is reinforced with four battons to the reverse. The paint layer is in stable condition although a bit abraded in the foliage and in the middle foreground to the right. Retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the sky. The paint surface is under a glossy and somewhat discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light reveals additional spots of retouching throughout the sky, especially along a horizontal crack of circa 30 cm which has been restored in the upper right; scattered minor retouchings in the hills and some tiny scattered spots in the figures and lower half of the painting. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame, with a few chips, but overall in good condition. (JD).
